Girls basketball: Cats begin to relish roles on the court

When senior Taylor Lorbiecki went down with an injury earlier in the year, head coach Angie Murphy said the Verona girls basketball team had to adjust and try and fill her role by committee on the court. Following a 42-28 stifling of Janesville Craig last Friday, several players contributed to the team effort, including senior guard Alyssa Dreher and sophomore guard Marley Campbell – who scored four points in the fourth quarter to put Verona in control.

Winning the majority of matches, not including forfeits, wasn’t a problem for the Verona wrestling team until Sun Prairie came to town last Friday. Verona won some tough matches and stayed close in a few losses, but three forfeits and a 4-6 record in wrestled matches – with five of six losses yielding bonus points – led to a 51-25 loss.

The Verona/Mount Horeb boys swimming team was able to cruise past Big Eight Conference rival Sun Prairie without too much trouble Tuesday evening, 109-61. Seventh ranked Middleton, as head coach Bill Wuerger expected, presented a much bigger challenge, dunking the host Wildcats 111-59 in a triple dual that doubled as both Parents and Senior Night.

Boys basketball: Tale of two halves for Cats' defense

One point is all that separated the Verona boys basketball team from its second win of the season last Saturday, but in the end, Janesville Craig’s 60 percent (14-for-23) shooting from the floor and six 3-pointers in the first half was too much to overcome in a 63-62 loss.

Boys hockey: Snowstorm ices Wildcats

Joel Marshall and the Verona boys hockey team were hoping to keep the momentum rolling last Friday against Big Eight rival Madison Memorial before squaring off against Middleton this Saturday. A late-season snowstorm had other ideas, however, forcing last week’s game against the winless Spartans (0-9) to be pushed back to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, inside the Madison Ice Arena.
